This is one of the most fascinating destinations we sell. We heard about Bolton Lake from customers of ours who had gone to the lodge for many years with conventional gear. The stories of GIANT PIKE and HUGE LAKERS were expected. Great fishing for those species can be found in many areas of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. What got our ears perked up were the stories of BIG BROOK TROUT!
We know a lot about travel destinations and where trophy fish of many species can be found but this was one not on our radar.

The Fishing
We had two questions. Why had we not heard of this and was it all true? The last question first. Yes it is all true. Bolton Lake and the surrounding area has all the makings of one of the most prolific unknown north woods areas yet to be discovered by fly anglers. The reason no one in the fly fishing world knows about it was that it has only catered to conventional anglers over the years. That is not the case anymore. With the growing popularity of fly fishing for Pike and the newly added fly out program for trophy Brook Trout Bolton Lake will fast become a hot destination for those wanting to hunt big Pike and trophy Brook Trout. We are working with Trevor Dick and the crew at Bolton Lake developing a fly fishing program. A couple of the guides have fly fishing experience and Trevor has been a fly angler for several years and really knows what he is doing. Other guides are learning the ropes. The one thing these guides do know though is how to get you on fish. There will be no shortage of fishy waters and the guides have years of combined service on these waters.
One of the places many fly anglers aspire to travel to is the rich Brook Trout area of Labrador. While we believe Labrador to be a special place and worth the trip, there are however other areas of Canada with trophy Brook Trout. Imagine a Pike fishery of the quality of Lake Wollaston and a Brook Trout fishery only second maybe to Labrador all together in one place! Not to mention the trophy Lake Trout and Walleye fishery.
We feel very fortunate to have found this place and feel like it will quickly become a hot destination for fly anglers in the states. Great fishing in a beautifully rough desolate Northwood’s destination, this is the kind of destination that gets the angler away from civilization. This is one of the best fishing experiences we can offer and we think you will agree.

Accommodations
A new main lodge was built in 2002 and it sets on the hill next to the guest cabins. It is very nicely appointed and has that classic Northwood’s feel that make these lodges special. Many of us had our first fishing trips as kids to these types of lodges and they bring back great memories..
All cabins are equipped with modern plumbing and off each bedroom there is a full in suite bathroom. There is 110 volt electricity that runs 24 hours. Each cabin is heated with propane heat and there is a fridge in every room. The cabins have full decks over looking Bolton Lake, the view is great. The cabins and lodge are very clean and up keep is tidy to say the least.

The Food
The food is outstanding and includes steak, chicken, pork and of course lots of fish. All meals are in the main lodge and served family style.
You will get under way for the day with a nice northwoods breakfast which includes pancakes, eggs, fruit and pastries. Dinners are home cooked with all the fixing’s from scratch with salads, soups and homemade bread.
Shore lunches were made famous at Canadian fishing lodges and the meal of the day does not disappoint. Fresh walleye and pike in batter on an open fire is a treat everyone should experience. They also do a great walleye in tin foil for a healthy alternative. Do not expect fine table cloths and wine this is a first class northwoods fishing lodge that does food the old fashion way from scratch and there is plenty of it.

Season
The early ice out season starts in late May. This time period for Pike and Lake Trout is out of this world. First open water usually brings huge Lake Trout and early spawning Pike from deep water. This early season can be very good. It is however dependent on warm May temperatures. There are times the lake could have ice on it in late May.
June is the most popular month at Bolton with stable weather patterns and a plethora of fishing opportunities. The Lakers are still shallow early in the month and can easily be reached with a fly rod. The Pike are shallow and can be caught a number of different ways including big divers and streamers. Brook trout are really good with streamers and the occasional hatch of Mayflies.
July is the best weather but the fishing is different. The pike are in slightly deeper water and the Lakers have gone deep and out of reach for fly anglers. The Brook Trout fishing though is off the hook with 50 fish days a possibility.August is the best month for big Pike. The weather is very stable and the pike are still in shallow weed beds. The Brook Trout fishing remains very strong.
September is a repeat of June with Lakers coming shallow and big Pike on the feed. Everything is going good at this time including the Brook Trout.

Gear
Rods
- 9ft 9 or 10 weight rod for Pike and Lake Trout
- 9ft 5 or 6 weight for Brook Trout
Note: This is one destination we highly recommend back up rods. This is not a fly fishing destination and the lodge will not have back ups. Bring a couple of each.
Reels
We prefer large Arbor reels in this situation that will fit 5 - 9 weight rods. Make sure you have a reel with 150 years of backing and have a stout drag you can crank down for the Pike. The Brook Trout are big and light tippets are not a big concern so something pretty basic works for the Brookies. A large Arbor is still nice for these fish though.
Lines
Floating lines for each rod is standard and that is what you will use 80% of the time. If for some reason though the weather gets unseasonably warm then a sinking line is important. We recommend a 300 grain for Pike and a 15 foot type 3 for the brook trout.
Leaders
- 9ft. Pike Toothy Leaders with 20 pound wire. You can also use heavy hard mono tippets of 30 pound as well for Pike. We recommend the S/A wire leaders with the haywire connector.
- 9ft 2x Trout leaders for streamer fishing for Brookies
- 9ft 4x for dry fly fishing for Brookies.
- Take appropriate matching spools of tippet for each and some extra wire of 20 pounds.
Clothing and Gear
- Fast wicking clothing is a must from head to toe we recommend Capliene 3 top and bottom.
- Waders
- Wading Boots
- Windproof Jacket
- Fleece Pants for under waders we recommend the Lightweight R4 from Patagonia
- Rain Jacket and Rain Pants for boat fishing.
- Baseball Cap
- Beenie for cold mornings
- Windproof Fingerless gloves
- Fishing shirts and pants
- Boat Bag that has a cover or is waterproof
- Sunscreen
- Camera
- Polarized Sunglasses
- Special Medications
